Ionomycin (SQ23377) is a selective and potent Ca 2+ ionophore. It is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by Streptomyces conglobatus. Ionomycin (SQ23377) is highly specific for divalent cations (Ca>Mg>Sr=Ba). Ionomycin (SQ23377) promotes apoptosis. Ionomycin also induces the activation of protein kinase C (PKC). Its depletion of intracellular Ca 2+ stores may be linked to the induction of apoptosis. Ionomycin is commonly used to both modify intracellular Ca²⁺ concentrations and to calibrate fluorescent Ca²⁺ indicators
