Background:
Althiomycin is a polyketide synthase-derived thiazole antibiotic originally isolated fromS. althioticus.1It is active against Gram-positive bacteria, includingS. aureus,S. epidermidis, andS. pyogenes(MICs = 25, 25, and 3.1 µg/ml, respectively).2Althiomycin inhibits protein synthesis inE. coliwhen used at concentrations of 1 and 10 µg/ml but not in isolated rabbit reticulocytes at 100 µg/ml.3
