Gramine HCl (Donaxine) is a naturally occurring indole alkaloid found in several plant species such as giant reed. Gramine is useful for the preparation of D2 receptor antagonists, proliferation inhibitors, DL-Tryptophan, 5-HT6 receptor ligand templates, and PKC down regulators. Gramine may play a defensive role in these plants, since it is toxic to many organisms. Gramine inhibits angiogenesis and induces apoptosis via modulation of TGF-β signalling in 7,12 dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) induced hamster buccal pouch carcinoma.
