Galanthamine N-Oxide, the N-oxidated analog of galathamine, is a naturally occuring alkaloid isolated from the bulbs of Zephyranthes concolor. Galanthamine N-Oxide inhibits electric eel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) with an EC50 of 26.2 μM. Galanthamine N-Oxide is a potent inhibitor of substrate accommodation in the active site of the Torpedo californica AChE (TcAChE), hAChE and hBChE enzymes. Galanthamine is a potent and long-acting AChE inhibitor with IC50 of 0.35 μM, it exhibits 50-fold selectivity against butyryl-cholinesterase. It is a long-acting, centrally active acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and allosteric potentiator at neuronal nicotinic ACh receptors. It can prevents β-amyloid-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y and bovine chromaffin cells.
