Enterolactone is an enterobacterial breakdown product of plant lignans that is absorbed and can be measured in human serum. Enterolactone and other lignans and phytoestrogens have been associated with a reduced risk of acute coronary events, hormone-dependent cancers, and possibly osteoporosis.
