Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by Th17 cells. IL-17 regulates the activities of NF-kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinases and stimulates the expression of IL6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX-2), as well as the production of nitric oxide (NO). IL-17A stimulates the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6, and induces production of the neutrophil chemoattractants IL-8, CXCL1 and CXCL6. IL-17A is intimately involved in mucosal immunity against bacterial infections and has a putative role in some autoimmune disorders.
IL-17A is a homodimer of two 136 amino acid chains. IL-17A exhibits cross-species bioactivity between human and murine cells. Recombinant IL-17 is a 31 kDa disulfide-linked homodier of two 136 amino acid polypeptide chains.
