Docosahexaenoic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid [1].
Docosahexaenoic acid, one of the main structural lipids in the mammalian brain, plays crucial roles in the development and function of brain neurons. Deficiency of docosahexaenoic acid induces loss of discriminative learning ability [1].
In neural stem cells (NSCs), docosahexaenoic acid is effective in a narrow range (i.e. 2 ~ 10 μM), and higher concentrations induced neuronal cell death. Docosahexaenoic acid at the concentration of 10 μM significantly increased the number of Tuj1(+) neurons, and the newborn neurons in the docosahexaenoic acid group were morphologically more mature than those in the control. Furthermore, docosahexaenoic acid administration inhibited the proliferation of NSCs in the early stages of differentiation, and prevented cell death of differentiating NSCs [1].
Administration of docosahexaenoic acid (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) substantially increased the number of 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(+)/NeuN(+) newborn neurons in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus in adult rats, which suggested that dietary docosahexaenoic acid promoted hippocampal neurogenesis in adult rats [1].
